My experience with Spaniels began 35 years ago when I spent the winter of 1989/90 in England and had the opportunity to attend several of the local driven shoots and number of Spaniel Trials including the Springer Championship. I purchased a young male Springer and imported him to Canada in the Spring of 1990 and began trialing in 1991.
It has been my good fortune to make up 3 Canadian Field Trial Champions. I was blessed with a great dog who took me to a 2nd placement in the 2004 Canadian National Championship. In 2005, I had the pleasure of judging the Canadian National Spaniel Championship in Quebec. Since 2007, I have been actively shooting at many trials each including several Nationals. Field trial gunning over the last 17 years has given me an excellent vantage point to witness some really great dog and handler performances. This year, I am very excited to return as a competitor with a young Cocker Spaniel.

I am so very pleased to be selected to judge the 2025 Canadian National Open Spaniel Championship and the opportunity to return to Quebec.

My wife and I would like to wish all the competitors the best of luck.

I am honoured to have been selected to judge the 2025 Canadian National Open Spaniel Championship.

My introduction to Upland Hunting came at a very young age. My father David was a very avid grouse and woodcock man. Wild pheasant came later. Together with my brothers, I followed with more enthusiasm than a young puppy on many colourful, brilliant, clear, crisp fall days, in and about Old Homesteads covers here in Northern Nova Scotia. My early hunting was limited to grouse and woodcock with Labrador or Golden Retrievers who excelled on upland game. We kept our dogs sharp in the off seasons running Hunt Tests with Master Hunters. Waterfowl for them and I came soon thereafter.

My introduction to Spaniels was again at the direction of my Dad. He joined the (Scotia Springer Club). My wife Louann and I joined him shortly afterwards and we purchased our first Spaniel, Flushingwings Jazzman (Jazz) from John Mitchell in 1997. Jazz became the High Point Springer in Canada in 2003 and again in 2004. Since that time, I have had the good fortune spending many days walking, (sometimes running) behind both Springers and Cockers, ….and yes sometimes, the odd Labrador. Some days were Diamonds, some Stones.

We live with our five dogs in the village of Hopewell in beautiful Northern Nova Scotia, Canada’s Ocean Playground. I have judged Springers and Cockers on many, occasions across Canada and the USA‘s Northeast. I believe I have developed a real understanding of both types of dogs. Over the years, I have met and become friends with numerous Spaniel lovers from both counties who share our wonderful sport. I have also enjoyed gunning three Canadian National Championships.

I would like to thank the 2025 Open National Spaniel selection committee and the Spaniel Clubs across this Great Nation for their confidence in my judging abilities and understanding of the dogs in our sport. it will be my honour to judge your Spaniels with my Co Judge (Arley Elliot) in this year’s National Open Championships. Always remember to “KEEP YOUR STICK ON THE ICE!”
